    I followed the video but seem to have trouble getting an ip address assigned by the dhcp. I have used a different range for the ip scope (10.0.0.10 - 10..0.0.100) and when i logged into the workstation pc Im getting assigned a private ip address (192.168.64.110)despite dhcp being enabled. Any suggestions?

    Thanks for the video! This was really helpful. Question about the DNS settings. Your Server1 was had it's DNS server pointing to itself. Before promoting to DC, Server2 was set to Server1's address. After Server 2 was made DC with DNS role, should it then alos point to itself for DNS?

    • @ittaster

      Hi, this is a question that is often subject to discussion. The approach I tend to prefer is to point a DC (with DNS role installed) to itself and other DNS server as a secondary.

    Two questions. For this series of tutorials; 1- Do we want to use DHCP or is this a closed network? I noticed you went for a 192.168.1.0/24 configuration. 2-I also notice that you set aside a partition when allocating the disk space at the very beginning when creating the VMServer. I forgot to do that. Can that be undone or should I create a new virtual machine? by the way. thank you for such informative video.

    • @ittaster
      @ittaster 2 месяца назад

      Hi, I think it's a good idea to go through the set up of the DHCP role. Pretty much all Windows Server networks (except very small ones) deploy it. I have a video that goes through the process, that will help. In terms of the partitioning, I would go for a reinstall, because it's great for learning and becomes second nature.

    nice series up until this point. May i ask you what network settings you are using for your VM's? I tried everything and i can ping my server from the client vm but not find the DNS server. The DNS event loggs a warning ID4013: "The DNS server is waiting for Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to signal that the initial synchronization of the directory has been completed..." Any idea how to resolve this issue?

    Hello Jon, your videos on Windows Server 2022 have been a great help to me. I was able to download Windows Server 2022 and make for initial setup, Installation and configuration. Setting up Active Directory & Domain Services was no problem with your video. When it came to Installing & Configuring DHCP, there were some difficulties. None of my other computers were showing up on the Address Leases. What I noticed is that on the Server, in the Network Sharing, I would turn on the “Discover” tabs and hit “save changes”. I would exit out, come back in to find the “Discover” tabs turned off. I came to find out that in Search Bar, I should type in services.msc to open the Services Window. Then I would try and make sure that DNS Client, Function Discovery Resource Publication, SSDP Discovery and UPnP Device Host were all running. I found SSDP Discovery and UPnP Device Host to be Stopped. I went to each, made them to be as Automatic and hit Start to make them as Running. Then I would turn the Network Discoveries “on” and they would stay on. At that point my other computers would show up on the Address Leases after changing the IPV4 to “Obtain Address”. But now I want to make the computers to Join the Domain. I would hope that there might be a Tool to take the computer from DHCP to the Domain which I do not see. I have tried to assign IPV4 Static addresses as by the DHCP Assigned IPV4. I go to System>About> Domain. I click on the icon to change Domain. On the Windows Server 2022, Local Server, Domain is shown as topnotch.com. I go to System Properties window. Click to Change Domain or Workgroup. Click for Domain. If I type in topnotch.com and hit OK, I immediately get an error notice that “An Active Directory Domain Controller (AC DC) for the domain “topnotch.com” could not be contacted. I try again entering just topnotch and hit OK. A Window for Computer Name/Domain opens up. I type in the User Name just las shown at login. I type in the password used at login and hit OK. A few minutes goes by and I get the following error message: The following error occurred attempting to join the domain “topnotch”: The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. At times I wonder about making for a Subdomain name. I also think about how I changed SSDP and UPnP and the DHCP worked.

    • @ittaster
      @ittaster 2 месяца назад

      Hi, my suggestion is to revisit the basics. If you're using DHCP client devices need to configured to obatin an IP address. If you use the command ipconfig /all on a client device it will show the DHCP server and the address is being obtained, also the DNS server IP. The DHCP server needs to give out the IP address of the DNS server (DC). If you haven't done so already, take a look at my video that show to install and configure of the DHCP role. Before attempting to join the domain, check the domain name can be resolved by the client computer using nslookup.

    In regards to static IP assignments - what if I have laptops that need to remain mobile? IE what if I want them to be able to authenticate into the domain from anywhere, not necessarily from the same office?

    • @ittaster

      Hi, DHCP is typically the preferred option for client devices such as laptops etc. In a multiple office scenario a WAN is likely to be in place or VPN solution.

    I saw your list of videos and how to progressively go through them. Have made some progress. But now I have come to Installing & configuring DHCP - Windows Server 2019. My problem is when you go to list the IP No.s and Exclusions. I have 6 computers where the I.P.s go from 10.0.0.3X to 10.0.0.8X to 10.0.0.13X to 10.0.0.21X 10.0.0.24X to 192.168.2.X. How would I list all these I.P.s with or without Exclusions or is there another way to list the I.P.s? I have tried changing the I.P.s where they are near range to each other but a short time later, they revert back.

    • @ittaster
      @ittaster 3 месяца назад

      Hi, exclusions are typically used for devices that are assigned a static/fixed IP address, set on the device manually (a network printer for example). The DHCP scope is used to specify the range of addresses to be assigned to DHCP client devices (for example: start address: 10.0.0.10) end address 10.0.0.100). 192.168.2.x is a different subnet. I have a short series of videos that cover IPv4 addresses and how they work that you may find helpful too.

    I am a retired Land Surveyor who has worked for larger Engineering firms where we would share Engineering Data from the Field Surveyors to the Office Surveyors to the Civil Engineers and Architects and back and forth through the companies File Servers, to complete a Land Development Project. Now I am trying to make for my own Home Server. I found an older Desktop Computer with 64GB RAM and 7.28TB Storage. I have downloaded and done a partial installation on Windows Server 2019 Standard in my computer. But now I am wondering what is the progression or sequence as to which of your video's on Windows Server 2019 might come first, second, third............... Your video's have been most understandable to me regarding Windows Server 2019. You might consider making a video on the sequence or progression of all the Windows Server 2019 video's which is the foundation and how you build your way up.
